You might own the business, or be responsible for a business unit. You might be running a professional services practice, or a staff person within the business. If you want different results, you need to do things differently. Change starts with you.

As the business owner responsibility starts and ends with you. You can’t do it all, so you must do your work through others. This is a difficult spot, at the top. Your Board expects you to do, your management team expects you to know, and everyone expects you to lead.

As an executive with functional or departmental responsibilities you have your own set of challenges. Of course, you too are expected to do, to know and to lead.

As a manager or staff person you may have little organizational authority. You have to do your work within a tight set of limitations and may not have any “ownership” per se. We see that differently though. You do own a business, the business of you. You are providing value to the organization, you too have to stay relevant in order to compete, you too should to be engaged with doing, knowing, and leading.
